RESPONSIBILITIES

The position of Director, Gifts-In-Wills, Bequests & Legacies is a role for a senior fundraising leader within The Salvation Army, responsible for cultivating and stewarding high-value relationships with all donors and especially existing major donors, across the Territory.

With a deep understanding of stewardship and philanthropic engagement, the Director will develop and execute strategies that inspire compassion and generosity, securing transformational gifts across The Territory.

This position requires a strategic thinker with financial acumen, exceptional interpersonal skills and a deep understanding of philanthropic trends. The Director will develop tailored engagement plans, coordinate donor recognition efforts, and collaborate closely with leadership to align giving opportunities with organisational priorities.

Success in this role will directly impact TSA's ability to deliver life-changing programs to vulnerable communities across The Territory.

We are seeking a strategic, compassionate, and results-driven Director to oversee and grow our Legacies and Bequests programs. This role is pivotal in securing long-term philanthropic support by managing legacy marketing campaigns with the Lead Public Relations & special Events, cultivating relationships with supporters, stewarding potential and advised bequests and ensuring the ethical and effective administration of bequests.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

• Develop and implement a territorial strategy for legacy & bequest fundraising and stewardship of bequestors
• Set and monitor KPIs to grow income from legacies and bequests
• Collaborate with senior leadership to align legacy giving with broader fundraising goals
• Provide expert guidance across the Territorial legacy teams
• Build a dedicated, dedicated and committed Legacy Fundraising Team

Supporter Engagement & Stewardship

• Design and deliver tailored communications and events to build meaningful relationships with potential legacy donors
• Maintain a legacy pledge recognition program such as a bequestor society or club, e.g." The William Booth Society" with exclusive events to honour and retain legacy donors

Marketing & Campaigns

• Develop and manage integrated campaigns to raise awareness of legacy opportunities
• Lead the creation of compelling legacy marketing materials across print, digital, and direct mail in collaboration with the Lead Public Relations & Events
• Oversee market research and audience segmentation to refine messaging
• Ensure that the marketing programs achieve pre-agreed KRAs and KPIs

Bequest Administration

• Analysis of current donor pipeline and legacy pledges
• Work closely with legal and finance teams to ensure timely and ethical administration of estates
• Liaise with executors, solicitors, and family members with professionalism and sensitivity
• Maintain accurate records and reporting of bequest income and pipeline
• Ensure that the Bequest Programs achieve pre-agreed KRAs and KPIs

Team Leadership & Collaboration

• Lead and mentor a small team of legacy officers and support staff across The Territory.
• Create a highly effective fundraising team with a shared vision, clear goals and the highest level of trust in your leadership, exhibiting absolute commitment to the agreed programs and goals.
• Foster collaboration across fundraising, communications, and mission delivery teams
• Represent The Salvation Army at external forums and legacy sector networks

Essential

• A university-relevant discipline qualification
• Fundraising qualification or certification (e.g. CFRE)
• Strategic planning and financial acumen
• Proven experience in legacy fundraising, planned giving, or major gifts
• Strong understanding of tax & estate law, wills, and charitable bequests
• Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
• Strategic thinker with a track record of delivering growth and innovation
• Empathy, discretion, and professionalism when dealing with sensitive matters
• Experience managing teams and cross-functional projects
• Passion for mission-driven work and alignment with The Salvation Army's values

Preferred

• Experience working in a faith-based or mission-driven organisation
• Familiarity with CRM systems and donor databases
