Job Description
Purpose of the Role
The Senior Occupational Therapist is an advanced practitioner in helping clients restore mobility, function, and independence through a detailed assessment of problems and individualised treatments. Working in a multidisciplinary team to ensure a high standard of clinical practice and professional conduct in all areas of client care. The Senior OT monitors the caseloads and performance of junior therapists and provides supervision as needed.
With advanced expertise and knowledge in assessing physical and functional status and needs of clients with physical limitations resulting from stroke, traumatic brain injury, amputation, and various neuromuscular conditions.
The incumbent shall take initiative and be sensitive to the needs of clients. Ideally, possessing some management, leadership and problem-solving skills to be successful in the role.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform therapy interventions and client education
- Perform appropriate interventions based on findings, goals, and treatment plans
- Evaluate therapy progress and outcomes using selected therapy outcome measures at regular intervals
- Modify therapy plans based on client performance, motivation, safety as well as therapy outcome measures collected
- Communicate the intervention plans, outcome measures, progress and discharge criteria to clients and relevant stakeholders
- Educate clients’ families and employers about how to accommodate and support clients in their rehabilitation
- Provide clients and caregivers with education and training in self-management
- Assist to develop and implement client and caregiver educational materials and training programmes
- Design and provide evidence-based and client-centred interventions (individual and groups) in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team to improve client ability in functional domains, to promote reintegration to home, work and society
- Perform field work involving visits to healthcare institutions, home, and worksite visits to support clients’ transition into employment and the community
Provide supervision and team development
- Mentor support staff and therapists for professional development purposes
- Perform peer audits on compliance to clinical standards
- Teach techniques in assessment and management of basic and complex cases Review clinical competency standards of staff
- Plan induction and clinical orientation for new team members
- Provide clinical supervision for students
- Provide clinical supervision for support staff and therapists
- Monitor performance and development of direct reports
- Assist in overseeing and managing the daily operational workflow and manpower needs of the Rehabilitation team
- Assist in the development of new clinical services or research projects involving internal and/or external stakeholders
- Participate in the recruitment process of junior therapists and therapy assistants
Qualifications and Skills
Degree in Occupational Therapy
Preferably 5 years relevant experience for senior positions
Good communications and interpersonal skills
Prior experience in mentoring and training preferred for senior positions
