Job Description

Title: Senior Manufacturing Test Engineer

Problems We Work On
The Manufacturing Test Engineering team at Block is responsible for making sure that the millions of hardware devices leaving our factories are built according to design and meet (or exceed) customer expectations. We design board-level and end-of-line test stations to test our products, including the following subsystem technologies: display, touch, NFC, audio, WLAN.  We’re a diverse group of engineers that use our unique backgrounds to solve challenging problems in our factories. We dabble in electrical engineering, software, mechanicals and data analysis to understand the design intent of our products and understand how we can translate it to scalable test plans. We are Jacks and Jills of all trades, and we thrive on having a deep systems-level understanding of Block’s hardware products.

Please note that this role is based in Singapore with frequent travel to Malaysia, Vietnam and China.

Core Responsibilities:

* Design, build and support board-level and product-level functional testers, including:

  •   - Independent debugging and resolution of test station issues

  •   - Proactive identification and implementation of station improvements

  •   - Timely response to factory-impacting issues

  •   - Act as the Directly Responsible Individual for test stations - owning development, deployment, and production support

* Develop and maintain test station software, including:

  •   - Autonomously writing and debugging code through appropriate review processes

  •   - Implementing comprehensive error logging and debugging capabilities

* Analyze test station data and measurements, including:

  •   - Conducting thorough root cause analysis of test failures

  •   - Documenting and communicating findings to stakeholders

  •   - Proposing and implementing evidence-based solutions

Professional Requirements:

* Maintain effective communication with global stakeholders

  •   - Provide timely updates on work status and blockers

  •   - Document technical investigations comprehensively

  •   - Manage priorities independently and communicate changes proactively

* Drive continuous improvement

  •   - Identify opportunities for process and system enhancement

  •   - Take ownership of problems through to resolution

  •   - Balance immediate needs with long-term improvements

* Cross-functional collaboration

  •   - Work effectively with Engineering teams on testability requirements

  •   - Coordinate with factory teams on implementation

  •   - Manage competing priorities across stakeholder groups

You have:

  • 5+ years of experience in electronics manufacturing

  • Experience working in Python, Labview, or similar programming language

  • Experience in statistics, and using SQL, JMP, Matplotlib, or similar data visualization programs

  • Ability to read schematics

  • Knowledge in circuit design at the “maker” level or beyond (e.g. projects like LED controllers, home automation, weather stations, etc.)

  • Excited to work on hands-on projects and to make things work in EE, software, and/or ME realms

  • Experienced with hardware lab equipment for test, measurement (e.g. oscilloscope, power supply, DMM, etc.), and/or prototyping (Raspberry Pi, Arduino, 3D printing, powertools, etc.)

  • Enthusiastic to apply methodical engineering problem-solving skills to dig into challenges that are outside of your expertise

  • Able and willing to travel internationally 20% as needed

Even Better:

  • Familiar with board-level (SMT) and product-level (FATP) electronics manufacturing processes

  • Experienced in reading and understanding electronics circuit diagrams and schematics

  • Experience performing analog measurements (RF, acoustic, optical, etc.) including calibration and control of systematic errors

  • Experience managing contract manufacturing test engineering partners to drive GR&R, DOE, and factory test dry runs to prepare for prototype NPI builds

  • Experience driving yield and cycle time optimizations

  • Experience writing clear reports (Build Reports, Station Issue Lists/Material Issue Lists, SOPs)
