Job Description
Metal Joining
Fuse metals together using techniques such as:
MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding
TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding
Stick/Arc welding
Flux-cored welding
Ensure strong, permanent, and precise joints in accordance with project specifications.
Blueprint and Specification Interpretation
Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols.
Follow exact dimensions, materials, and welding methods indicated in the design.
Preparation and Setup
Prepare metal surfaces by cleaning, cutting, grinding, or shaping.
Set up welding equipment correctly (e.g., machines, torches, electrodes).
Select appropriate welding consumables (rods, wire, shielding gas).
Inspection and Quality Control
Inspect welds for defects like cracks, porosity, or incomplete fusion.
Use testing methods like:
Visual inspection
Non-destructive testing (NDT)
Destructive testing (when required)
Maintain high-quality standards and comply with safety and industry codes.
Maintenance of Equipment
Regularly check and maintain welding machines, torches, protective gear, and safety equipment.
Ensure welding equipment is functional, calibrated, and safe to use.
Safety Compliance
Follow safety protocols to prevent injuries:
Wear PPE (helmets, gloves, aprons, goggles)
Ensure proper ventilation to avoid fume inhalation
Use fire-resistant materials and shields to avoid burns and fire hazards
Report any hazards, unsafe conditions, or equipment malfunctions.
Collaboration
Work closely with engineers, fabricators, and other construction or manufacturing team members.
Provide feedback on metal behavior, fit-up issues, or welding adjustments.
Record Keeping
Document work done, materials used, and inspections performed.
Maintain welding logs for quality tracking and regulatory compliance.
Additional Responsibilities Depending on Experience Level
Entry-Level Welder:
Assist in cutting, grinding, and basic welding under supervision.
Focus on learning techniques and safety practices.
Experienced/Senior Welder:
Take responsibility for complex welding tasks.
Mentor junior welders and provide technical guidance.
Troubleshoot welding defects and suggest process improvements.
Specialized Welder Roles:
Pipe Welder: Works on pipelines, often requires certification for high-pressure systems.
Structural Welder: Focuses on steel frameworks for buildings or bridges.
Underwater Welder: Requires scuba certification, welding on submerged structures.
Automotive/Ship Welder: Specializes in vehicle or ship repair and fabrication.
