Job Description

The College of Engineering at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is actively seeking an outstanding researcher in Quantum and Nano Photonics to advance frontier research in photonic science, semiconductor materials, and quantum-enabled technologies. This position is intended to strengthen NTU’s strategic capabilities in next-generation photonics, quantum devices, and advanced semiconductor platforms.

The successful candidate may be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor (tenure-track or tenured), or Professor (practice-track or tenured), depending on qualifications, experience, and demonstrated academic leadership.

The selected candidate is expected to collaborate with faculty across multiple schools and research centres, while contributing to the attraction of competitive interdisciplinary research funding from public agencies and industry. The overarching objective is to further strengthen NTU as a leading international hub in Quantum and Nano Photonics, spanning fundamental science, translational innovation, and industrial relevance.

While the candidate will primarily affiliate with the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), joint appointments with other schools within the College of Engineering or College of Science may be considered, depending on research expertise.

We seek individuals with strong scholarly achievements and, where appropriate, demonstrated leadership in areas such as quantum photonics, semiconductor nanostructures, nano-optoelectronics, integrated photonics, single-photon emitters, exciton-polariton systems, topological photonics, wide-bandgap semiconductor devices, photonic materials, and related domains.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to contribute to interdisciplinary research, foster a collaborative environment, and align with NTU’s ambition to lead in quantum technologies, semiconductor innovation, and advanced photonic systems.

The selected candidate will be expected to:

  • For senior appointments: provide academic leadership in developing new research capabilities, shaping strategic programmes, mentoring junior faculty, and securing major external funding.

  • For junior appointments: establish an independent, high-quality research programme, contribute actively to collaborative initiatives, and build a strong trajectory in research and teaching excellence.

Performance indicators include:

  • Strong academic impact through publications, citations, and international recognition

  • Successful acquisition of competitive research grants appropriate to career stage

  • Leadership or active participation in major research initiatives, centres, or consortia

  • Translation of research into patents, licensing, startups, or industrial deployment where relevant

  • Contribution to national priorities in semiconductors, quantum technologies, and photonics

  • Effective mentorship of graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and research staff

  • Building strong collaborations with NTU’s industry and research partners

Requirements:

  • PhD Qualification: Relevant PhD from a reputable university in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Photonics, or a related discipline.

  • Research Excellence: Strong record in Quantum and Nano Photonics, evidenced by impactful publications, citations, patents, grants, or other scholarly achievements appropriate to rank.

  • Teaching & Mentoring: Commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching, with demonstrated or strong potential for supervision and mentorship.

  • Leadership (for senior appointments): Proven ability to lead research teams, centres, or multi-institutional programmes.

  • Research Potential (for junior appointments): Clear promise to develop an internationally competitive research programme.

  • Cross-disciplinary Collaboration: Ability to bridge engineering, physics, materials science, and industrial innovation.

  • Funding Knowledge: Good understanding of national and international research funding ecosystems.

  • International Standing: For senior appointments, established international recognition; for junior appointments, strong emerging visibility and potential
